Frequently Asked Questions
Egypt eVisa rules for UK travellers with foreign-issued passports
A British citizen departing from Australia for Egypt can usually be assessed using a valid British passport even when that passport was issued by a British embassy or consulate in another country. The place shown as the place of issue does not erase British nationality, but every field on the application must match the travel document. The flight route and the traveller’s Australian residence do not determine Egyptian eligibility.
If “UK traveller” means someone living in Britain who holds a non-British passport, eligibility follows the nationality of the passport being used, with residence sometimes affecting separate visa-on-arrival categories. Anyone holding two passports should apply with the document they intend to carry and check whether the destination treats the two documents differently.
Passport nationality and place of issue
Nationality and place of issue answer different questions. Nationality establishes the travel-visa category; place of issue identifies where the document was produced. A British passport issued in Cairo, Sydney or another foreign post remains a British passport if its issuing authority is the United Kingdom. Egyptian authorities therefore review the document itself, not just the city where it was signed.
For a consular-issued British passport, read the biographical page and machine-readable zone before applying. Copy the place of issue exactly as printed, even if it looks surprising or differs from the country where the application is being made. Do not replace the listed issuing country with Australia because that is the departure point.
Different rules apply to British Overseas Citizen, British National (Overseas), British Subject and protected-person status. These labels are not interchangeable with British citizenship, and some holders use another passport or travel document. Check the legal status attached to the specific passport before paying an online visa fee.
Who qualifies for Egypt eVisa
Egypt’s eVisa is an electronic visa checked before the journey. It can reduce uncertainty at the airport by linking the approved permission to the passport number. British citizens can generally obtain an Egypt visa on arrival, while an eVisa is useful for anyone who wants permission confirmed before flying or is travelling with a passport arrangement that may complicate a visa-on-arrival check.
Eligibility is controlled by Egypt’s current official list, and approved applications receive details of the permitted stay. The applicant should use the official government portal or an authorised application provider, then retain the approval message and reference number. Third-party sites may add a service charge, so compare the full amount and avoid duplicate applications.
A US stop requires a separate assessment. Before routing a UK citizen through the United States, check UK ESTA eligibility and allow time for that decision; an ESTA never authorises entry to Egypt. Likewise, an Egyptian eVisa does not satisfy US entry formalities.
Documents that must match
Prepare the physical passport, its biodata page and the machine-readable zone. A typical application asks for the full name, nationality, date and place of birth, passport number, issuing authority, issue and expiry dates, place of issue, home address, occupation, purpose of travel, intended arrival date, accommodation and contact details. Names must match the passport, including middle names where requested.
Use United Kingdom for nationality and transcribe the issuing authority and place of issue exactly as the form requires. If the form offers a country-level issuing-authority field, select the United Kingdom for a British passport; if it asks for the location printed on the document, transcribe that separately. A departure from Australia is not a place of issue.
A confirmed itinerary, return or onward ticket, booking reference and accommodation address can help an officer understand the trip. A business invitation, employment letter or sponsor details may also be useful where the purpose is not tourism. These records do not replace the passport or a visa, but they can prevent avoidable delays.
Timing validity and border checks
Apply with enough time for the official process and travel changes. Egyptian eVisa options have commonly included a 30-day single-entry permission and a 90-day multiple-entry permission, with the permitted validity linked to the approval date. The issuing portal and the approval notice are authoritative because categories, fees and processing times can change.
At check-in and on arrival, the airline and border officer can still refuse travel if the document, visa or stated purpose does not line up. Carry the approval in the phone’s downloads and as a paper copy, along with the passport used for the application and onward travel evidence. Check the passport’s expiry and blank-page requirements before booking.
An onward Hawaiian itinerary creates another permission layer. Travellers should read ESTA conditions for Hawaii before a US stop, while remembering that US approval does not cover Egyptian entry. The same separation of permissions matters when a British passport was first issued in the United States, even if the traveller now lives in Australia.
Comparing electronic and traditional travel permissions
The correct route depends on nationality, purpose, length of stay and whether a pre-travel decision is needed. A direct comparison helps prevent travellers from buying a second authorisation for the same journey or assuming that a US waiver covers Egypt.
| Permission | Who may use it | Main process | Cost and timing | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Egypt eVisa | Eligible nationalities, including qualifying British citizens | Online application linked to the passport | Official portal fee; apply before travel | The approval must match the passport and permitted stay |
| Egypt visa on arrival | Nationalities permitted to enter on this basis | Apply at the designated Egyptian port | Port fee in Egyptian currency; airport processing time | It does not cover travellers whose nationality requires prior approval |
| Traditional Egyptian visa | Applicants needing an embassy or consulate decision | Submit documents to the appropriate mission | Fee and lead time vary by nationality | More paperwork and potentially longer processing |
| US ESTA | Eligible UK visitors making a qualifying US trip | Separate online US application | US fee and processing time apply | It provides no permission to enter Egypt |
Australian travellers leaving Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane commonly manage tickets and documents on a phone, so download the Egypt approval before airport Wi-Fi becomes uncertain and keep a paper copy in hand luggage. The local booking market includes online platforms and licensed agents; compare the total in Australian dollars, including provider and card fees. Smartraveller remains the official source for Australian advice, while the Biosecurity Act 2015 and strict goods declarations apply when returning home. None of those Australian arrangements grants permission to enter Egypt.
A practical pre-departure routine
A short final routine protects against the most common application mistakes:
- Confirm that the passport’s legal status is British citizenship rather than relying on UK residence.
- Check the current Egypt eVisa eligibility list and intended stay before paying.
- Enter passport data from the biodata page and machine-readable zone, including the exact place of issue.
- Use one official application and keep the approval, receipt, reference number and contact details.
- Confirm passport validity, blank pages, accommodation, return or onward ticket and entry conditions.
- Keep the Egypt approval separate from any US ESTA, airline boarding pass and supporting travel evidence.
Before submitting, check the live requirements against the traveller’s circumstances. If the passport was issued outside the United Kingdom, the holder has more than one nationality, or the trip combines Egypt with another destination, submit an inquiry through U R Food Safety with the passport type, legal status, place of issue and planned arrival date. Start with that review, then complete the official application and preserve every confirmation.
