Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Egypt e-Visa?
An Egypt e-Visa is an electronic travel authorization that allows eligible travelers to enter Egypt for tourism. Single-entry e-Visas are commonly issued for short stays.
How long is an ESTA valid for?
An approved ESTA is typically valid for two years from the date of authorization, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. It covers tourism, business, and transit visits.

Gap-year US travel: does an ESTA cover multiple trips?

Yes. A valid US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is not restricted to one entry, so UK travellers on a gap year can cross the US border, leave, and return while it remains valid. Every arrival still requires admission by US Customs and Border Protection, and the authorised stay may be shorter than the travel approval.

That flexibility suits routes combining the United States with Canada or Mexico, although a gap-year itinerary does not need to match the exact dates entered during the application. The important controls are the passport, ESTA validity, purpose of each visit and whether US immigration authorises entry that time.

Before applying, check the USA ESTA eligibility guidance. Australians using an Australian passport and British citizens using a full British passport are normally assessed under the Visa Waiver Program. A British Overseas Citizen, British National Overseas or someone travelling on a non-eligible passport may need a traditional visa instead.

For travellers based in Australia, online preparation is convenient, but approval does not cover paid employment or replace an onward itinerary. An Australian citizen should apply using the Australian passport held for the journey; a UK citizen resident in Australia should use their full British passport. Keep all identity details identical across the booking and application.

Multiple trips versus a single entry

The central distinction is between an approval that remains valid for repeated travel and a visa issued for one entry. It also matters that an ESTA authorises a person to request admission rather than guaranteeing that every crossing will be accepted.

Feature US ESTA Traditional US nonimmigrant visa
Travel basis Permission to request admission under the Visa Waiver Program. Consular authorisation for a particular visa category.
Repeated trips Multiple entries are allowed while the ESTA remains valid. Repeated travel depends on whether the visa is designated single or multiple entry.
Length of stay Usually up to 90 days per visit, subject to admission conditions. Determined by the visa category and authorisation granted at entry.
Permitted purpose Tourism, family visits and eligible short business activities; no employment. May cover employment, study, an exchange or another approved activity.
Application Short online process, normally without an interview. Detailed consular process, sometimes including an interview and biometrics.
Passport details The approval is linked to the passport and biometric details used to apply. Applicant details remain linked, although passport-replacement rules vary by visa.
Entry decision A CBP officer may admit, limit or refuse each arrival. Visa issuance remains separate from the admission decision at the border.

An ESTA therefore includes a multiple-travel benefit, provided the approval remains valid for every return. That benefit does not permit a traveller to spend an entire gap year in America or treat each crossing as a completely separate visitor allowance.

A traditional visa may be more appropriate when the US portion involves work, extended study or another activity outside the visitor category. Applying for the wrong authorisation can cause delays even when the traveller otherwise meets the personal eligibility requirements.

How long an ESTA remains usable

An approved ESTA is usually valid for two years, but the exact “Valid Until” date shown in the approval controls. The application date and travel date do not determine the expiry by themselves. Travellers should keep the authorisation beyond the date of their final planned US entry.

Leaving for Canada, Mexico or another country does not cancel a valid ESTA. A traveller can ordinarily depart and later present it again, although CBP may ask about the complete itinerary, funds, accommodation and reason for returning to the United States.

An ESTA can also be obtained while living in Australia rather than applying from Britain. The travel agent or airline may check that an approval appears valid, but neither organisation can guarantee permission to cross the US border.

What a 90-day visit means

The ESTA itself does not award a fixed 90-day stay. Most visitors receive permission for up to 90 days, but a border officer may admit someone for fewer days. The admission record and CBP’s electronic I-94 history are the best references for the period actually authorised.

Each entry is assessed separately. A traveller does not receive a fresh 90-day allowance without following the applicable visitor rules, particularly if they move frequently between the United States and Canada. Carry a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation and written details of the next travel segment.

US guidance for Visa Waiver Program visitors also states that the total stay must not exceed 180 days in any 180-day period. Anyone expecting to exceed the permitted visitor stay should seek an appropriate visa rather than assume that another ESTA entry will extend the authorised period.

When another ESTA application is required

A new application is required when the existing ESTA expires before the next intended US arrival. Travellers returning months after an initial visit should check the expiry date rather than relying on the usual two-year validity period.

Passport replacement also requires close attention because an ESTA is linked to the passport submitted with the application. If the original passport is lost, replaced or substantially damaged, the traveller should obtain a new ESTA for the replacement document before travelling.

Material identity changes must be handled before departure. A different surname following marriage, a change in marital status, or new passport or nationality information can make the earlier approval unusable. Email addresses and home addresses should also be kept current through the official account.

If the purpose changes from tourism to paid employment, a new ESTA is not the solution. The traveller needs an appropriate US visa or immigration status. Reapplying for visitor authorisation after obtaining work-related permission could create additional eligibility questions.

Planning an Australian-departure gap year

Eligible Australian citizens departing from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane can often use SmartGates for Australian border formalities. They should still carry the physical passport used for the journey. A photograph of an ESTA on a phone may help with reference checks, but it does not replace the passport or serve as an entry document.

The Australian travel market also shapes the planning. Many long-haul routes connect through Sydney or Melbourne, and Brisbane-based travellers may join those services there. Australian summer from December to February overlaps busy North American holiday periods, potentially increasing fares, while AUD–USD exchange costs can make an otherwise US-focused trip harder to budget.

Aussies commonly use informal words such as “hols” for holidays and “arvo” for the afternoon, but travel shorthand should not replace precise addresses in an ESTA application. A Las Vegas stop may prompt a quick look at the site’s blackjack early surrender rules, especially if gaming is unfamiliar. Casino visits remain ordinary leisure and do not extend an ESTA or permit casino employment.

Keeping the United States and Egypt separate

A route such as Sydney–London–Cairo–New York demonstrates why separate travel permissions matter. An ESTA applies only to entry into the United States. It has no effect on whether a UK traveller qualifies to visit Egypt, even when both countries appear on one purchased itinerary.

Egypt has its own eVisa eligibility, permitted-purpose, entry and passport rules. Travellers should confirm the authorised length of stay separately from the eVisa expiry and check whether it allows repeat entries. An Egyptian eVisa does not provide permission to enter the United States, while an approved ESTA does not satisfy Egyptian entry requirements.

A gap year containing work in another country can still include a tourist segment in America, but that segment must be temporary. Paid work in New Zealand, Canada or the UK gives no right to work in the United States, and an unpaid placement should be checked if it resembles employment. Transit countries may impose their own documentation rules as well.

Check, apply and carry the approval

Before every US leg, compare the passport expiry, ESTA validity, intended arrival dates, accommodation, available funds and onward travel. Explain any business meetings or planned activities accurately and avoid descriptions that suggest indefinite work or residence in the United States.

Apply as soon as the relevant US segment is known, particularly if the traveller already holds conflicting passport details or expects to make several return visits. Keep the approval reference accessible, retain the passport used for the application and check any electronic record before airport departure.

Use U R Food Safety’s linked guidance to confirm eligibility and timing, then submit an inquiry with the intended arrival date, work plans and any unusual itinerary details. Secure the correct authorisation before the US leg, carry the matching passport and arrive prepared to explain the entire journey at every return.

UK citizens traveling for short-term tourism, business, or transit can usually use the ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program. Longer stays or purposes such as work or study require a traditional visa.
Can I enter Egypt with a US visa?
Visa policies can vary by nationality. Travelers should verify current Egyptian entry requirements based on their specific passport and circumstances.
