Frequently Asked Questions
Using an ESTA for a US job interview as a UK traveller
A UK passport holder living in Australia may be able to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program for a job interview. An ESTA can cover certain short business activities, including meetings with potential employers, provided the visit does not involve taking up paid work or performing services in the US.
The purpose of the trip, the traveller’s nationality, previous travel history and planned activities all matter. Flying from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth does not change the immigration rules, and Australian permanent residence does not replace the need to qualify as a UK citizen using the Visa Waiver Program.
When an ESTA may be suitable
An ESTA is an electronic travel authorisation for eligible nationals visiting the US for tourism or permitted business purposes. A job interview may fit within the business visitor category when the traveller is attending meetings, discussing a possible role, assessing an employer or negotiating future arrangements without beginning employment.
For example, a UK citizen could fly to New York for interviews with a company, meet a recruitment team in San Francisco or attend a hiring day in Chicago. The visit should remain temporary, and the traveller must be able to explain that they will return to Australia or another country after the meetings.
An ESTA is not permission to work in the United States. It cannot be used to start the role, complete ordinary duties for a US employer, receive a US salary for work carried out there or provide services to clients during the visit.
The difference between interviewing and working
The line between a recruitment meeting and employment is important. Sitting in an office for an interview, presenting professional experience or discussing a future contract is different from joining a US team, training staff as part of the business or delivering paid work.
A visitor may usually attend meetings connected with a prospective position, but they should avoid bringing the trip forward as though employment has already started. If an employer asks the candidate to begin work immediately after the interview, the traveller may need a work-authorised visa and should not rely on the existing ESTA.
Travel plans should reflect the actual purpose. A person who tells a border officer that they are visiting for a holiday but then reveals a schedule of several employment interviews could face additional questions. Honest, consistent answers are safer than describing a business trip as a purely recreational visit.
Eligibility requirements for UK citizens
The applicant generally needs a valid electronic passport from the United Kingdom and must meet the Visa Waiver Program conditions. The nationality printed in the passport matters; living in Australia, holding an Australian visa or having an Australian partner does not create ESTA eligibility by itself.
British citizens should also check whether their passport status qualifies. Some forms of British nationality may not receive the same treatment as a British Citizen passport for Visa Waiver Program purposes. The passport must remain valid for the trip, and the traveller should apply before booking a complicated itinerary or heading to the airport.
Other factors can affect approval. Previous travel to certain countries, dual nationality, a past immigration breach, a refused US visa or a criminal history may lead to ESTA ineligibility or a need to apply for a visa instead. The online form should be completed accurately, including details about employment and travel history.
What to carry to the interview trip
An approved ESTA does not guarantee admission. Customs and Border Protection officers decide whether a traveller may enter at the port of arrival, so carrying sensible supporting material can help explain the visit. Useful documents may include interview invitations, emails from recruiters, a meeting schedule and contact details for the US companies involved.
Evidence of ties outside the US may also be relevant. A return or onward ticket, an Australian employment contract, approved leave, a rental agreement or details of a continuing business can help show that the trip is temporary. These documents do not guarantee entry, but they can make the intended purpose easier to understand.
Travellers from Australia often plan long-haul journeys months in advance, especially when combining interviews with a visit to family or a conference. It is wise to keep the interview itinerary clear and avoid packing the trip with activities that could appear to involve unauthorised work. The US travel requirements can be checked alongside the official US government information before departure.
Time limits and travel conditions
The Visa Waiver Program normally permits stays of up to 90 days. This is a maximum period rather than an entitlement, and a border officer may admit a traveller for a shorter period. An ESTA can generally be used for multiple trips while it remains valid, but each entry must meet the programme’s rules.
The authorisation is commonly valid for up to two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. A new passport, a change in name, a change in citizenship or certain changes to answers in the application may require a new ESTA. Approval should be checked after renewal rather than assumed to transfer automatically.
An ESTA also does not provide a route to extend the stay or change to a work visa from inside the US. Visa Waiver Program travellers normally waive the right to challenge a refusal of admission in the same way as a person entering with a conventional visa. Anyone expecting several interview rounds over an uncertain period should obtain professional immigration advice before travelling.
When a visa is the safer option
A visitor visa may be more appropriate when the planned activities are unclear, the traveller has a complicated immigration history or the intended stay is likely to exceed 90 days. It may also be necessary when an ESTA application is refused, when the traveller has visited a restricted country or when their nationality does not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program.
A work-related visa is required if the person will actually perform employment in the United States. The correct category depends on the role, the employer, the applicant’s qualifications and the structure of the proposed work. An interview for an H-1B, L-1, O-1 or another employment route is different from authorisation to begin that job.
The practical rule is straightforward: use an ESTA only for a genuine short business visit that does not include employment. If the hiring process involves paid training, hands-on duties, a trial shift or services for the prospective employer, the situation should be reviewed before travel rather than explained away at the border.
Special issues for Australians with UK passports
Many UK citizens living in Australia hold more than one passport. They should apply for the ESTA using the passport they intend to present when boarding and entering the US. Airline staff in Australia may check the authorisation before departure, and mismatched passport details can cause delays at the airport.
The same principle applies to a traveller flying from Auckland after visiting family in Queensland or connecting through Los Angeles on the way from Melbourne. The departure city does not determine eligibility. The passport, purpose of travel and personal circumstances do. Australian citizenship may provide a separate ESTA pathway if the person travels on an Australian passport, but they should not switch documents casually during the journey.
A UK traveller with a green card follows different rules from a UK citizen relying on ESTA. Permanent residents should review the guidance on green card holders before booking flights, since an ESTA is generally not the document used to establish their right to return to the United States.
Before paying for non-refundable flights from Australia, review the passport details, interview schedule and intended activities carefully. Travellers can use the ESTA guidance service to check general requirements and submit an enquiry when their circumstances need closer attention. A well-prepared application and a clear explanation of the visit can help keep a job interview trip focused on meetings rather than creating an immigration problem.
